Naturalization is the process by which a foreign national becomes a legal citizen of the United States. The fulfillment requirements are set forth in the Immigration and Nationality Act (NIA). Once the basic residential requirements have been met, passing the naturalization test is the final component to obtaining U.S. citizenship. Who is Qualified for Naturalization?

Generally speaking, citizens of foreign countries must have lived in the United States for a certain number of years before they are eligible for naturalization. During their time of residency, they must be the holder of a valid green card.

To meet residency requirements, one of the following must be true:

  • You have permanently resided in the United States during the five years prior to application and have been present in the country for at least 30 months during that 5-year stretch
  • You are married to a U.S. citizen, have permanently resided in the United States for at least three years prior to application, and have been present in the country for at least 18 months during that 3-year stretch
  • You have logged qualifying service time in the United States armed forces

Passing the Naturalization Test

To pass the naturalization test, applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language and an understanding of U.S. history and government. Applicants must also be of good moral character and affirm allegiance to the principles of the Constitution. Exemptions to the English language requirement may be made for persons aged 50 and above who have held a U.S. green card for 20 years or more.
